Latest restricted WACUP beta release is build #20202 (September 28th 2024) (x86 & x64 changelogs)

NOTE: Beta testers are added in a limited & subjective manner as I can only support so many people as part of the beta test program to keep it useful for my needs.

Unless I think you're going to be helpful, not all requests will be accepted but might still be later on. Remember that beta testing is to help me & the limitations currently works for my needs for this project.

Can't Play aac or wma Files
« on: May 18, 2024, 11:01:57 AM »
Hi - thanks for accepting me onto the forum  :)

I'm running the latest build of WACUP - Public preview v1.99.13.19100 (May 10th 2024) - on an up-to-date install of Windows 11.  I can't get WACUP to play aac or wma files.  The files load in WACUP but don't play.  It may well have been like this in previous builds, I certainly had some files that didn't play, can't recall if these were any of these.

Can anyone offer any help please?

On a different note, I'm so grateful someone is building on Winamp, WACUP is destined to be truly great.  Thank you.

Can you provide some info on what the AAC file contains (codec and the like)?
As for WMA, you'll have to manually enter the WMA file extension into the DirectShow plugin, since there's no longer a dedicated plugin that handles WMA/WMV.
Maker of Plugins, I suppose.

When saying aac files, are they mp4+aac or raw aac files or aac in some other container? As I know that mp4+aac when they're for example yt rips within the dash format do not currently work (if it's a pure aac frame in an mp4 container then that should be playing).

WMA is noted above though iirc it should on new installs try to use the re-used directshow plug-in unless that couldn't be obtained during install &/or wasn't selected.

Hi Eris Lund and dro,

Thank you for the replies, sorry for the delay in getting back to you -  I work away from home and got back last night.

aac - showing my ignorance here, but how do I get the info you've mentioned?
wma - showing more ignorance, I've looked for the DirectShow plugin in WACUP, can't see it, I was hoping to find it and add the extension as suggested.  Am I way off with what I'm trying to do?

Thanks for your help :-)

Hi arealhuman,

Get MediaInfo from here (https://mediaarea.net/en/MediaInfo). It is a small app that lets you see what is in your audio and video media files (container: format, profile, codec used, ...).

The DirectShow plug-in should have been in the WACUP installer. If it is not listed in the WACUP Preferences Plug-ins section, then rerun the installer in manual mode and look thru the options.

Hi Aminifu,

Thanks for the tip about Mediainfo!  Here are the details of the file in question, I hope this is the right info:

The alignment's gone a bit weird after copying/pasting.

I'll try the reinstall to see if I can get the DirectShow plug-in working hopefully later today.  After that I'm away for the week.

Thanks to everyone who's helped so far, much appreciated  :)

If in_dshow isn't present then most likely the install wasn't able to get in_mp3 which is the one which handles raw .aac files (the first file iirc is the winamp 5.1 example file or a close equivalent of it).

Hi - I've just installed the latest version of WACUP (WACUP preview build v1.99.15.19320 (x86)) on Win11.  During the custom install I expended each option and checked every box except the video playback one.  WACUP will still not play aac and wma files.  It's not a massive issue as I don't have many of these files, but you know what it's like when you want to fix something!

All the best to everyone :-)

Un-checking video support prevents in_dshow from being installed as I treat that as only being used for video formats though I should've changed that with the 193xx installers since I'm now trying to force WMA to in_dshow as long as the default associated extension configuration for that plug-in hasn't already been modified.

That would most likely explain why that's not working & I'll need to modify things to offer a WMA audio entry to allow for in_dshow to be considered for installing even if video support is intentionally disabled (this isn't ideal & a non in_dshow WMA mode is needed). Otherwise if it is present & the in_dshow config is showing WMA in it's list then it's likely the OS install doesn't have the necessary support.

I'd still need an example file showing the aac issue.

Hi dro,

Thanks again for your response.  WACUP reinstalled with video option checked, but wma files do not play.  Instead of doubling up on messages, I've responded to your email.  If we get to a solution I'll post it here so it's available to everyone.

Cheers,

Hi All, just to report that I've installed build 20202 and aac files play, although can't be skipped by dragging the playback slider or whatever it's called.  Only posting as a progress report, not a request for action!  Thanks again for the help :-)

I've yet to sort out seeking support but that's good to know that raw aac files are able to play (getting that implemented a few builds back helped to then get the streaming support implemented). Seeking support is already on my todo list as it seems a few of you out there play raw aac files instead of having them put in an mp4 file container.
