Latest WACUP public preview for x86 & x64 is build #20202 (September 28th 2024) (x86 & x64 changelogs)
Latest restricted WACUP beta release is build #20686 (December 23rd 2024) (x86 & x64 changelogs)

NOTE: Beta testers are added in a limited & subjective manner as I can only support so many people as part of the beta test program to keep it useful for my needs.

Unless I think you're going to be helpful, not all requests will be accepted but might still be later on. Remember that beta testing is to help me & the limitations currently works for my needs for this project.

Start in Virtual Desktop for Windows 10
« on: February 16, 2017, 04:41:48 PM »

Hi,

I've got Winamp with all plugins taking up a whole virtual desktop. Its lovely. Only problem is every morning when I start up (I'm a nightly booter) I have to drag winamp over. I played around with https://github.com/eksime/VDesk but it doesn't seem to jive with how winamp manages her windows ... just wondering if this is an option that could be added to the jump lists e.g. always start on desktop 1 or something.

Thanks!
Rob

I'd need to properly look into what the API interfaces are and what can even be done but it's definitely a good idea (if it can be done relatively nicely :) ).

From a quick look it's limited unless going with the undocumented interfaces (though it doesn't look like they've been broken) & hacks that the options out there seem to be using - it seems like it's been done so that it's down to the user to initiate the placement instead of allowing the program to directly (and officially) do it (a bit like with the file association changes with Win8).

When you close winamp and the plug-ins do you close winamp first or the whole desktop? For me, winamp always opens in the same spot where winamp was closed, regardless of which virtual desktop it was opened on. So you should not have to move winamp every time if you close it on the virtual desktop. Alternatively you could try changing the properties(right-click) of the winamp short-cut target to: vdesk run-on 2 "C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp" instead of just "C:\Program Files (x86)\Winamp". Just make sure to change it to wherever your winamp is installed. I have no idea about the plugins though.

Am going to hold off looking into this further until the Creator's Update has been out for a while just to see if anything has changed as part of that release (as the prior 'big' updates seem to have messed with things from what I saw with the tools out there).

With the window placement, Winamp will save it's position based on where it was last used which works irrespective of the virtual desktop being used, There's probably some quirks with it that aren't coming to mind (not sure on how virtual desktop + multiple monitors might work) but it seems like it generally doesn't make much of a difference to what programs have expected things to be like with a 'traditional' single desktop scenario.

"(not sure on how virtual desktop + multiple monitors might work)"

My previous answer was determined with multiple monitors, as well as with virtual desktops. I run 3 1080p monitors on my desktop. Hopefully MS doesn't change it, unless they make it so a program opens on the same monitor which it is accessed from the start menu. As things stand now, a program will open where it was last running even if you use the start menu on a different monitor to open it.
