Preview Build Discussion / "Refresh album art" behaviour

(I was ready to post this and saw a new version, and thought "Oh God, the pandemic will really give us a full featured Wacup!" Thank you Devs, you shine a ray of green light (and a green thunder) upon our miserable lives!

There's an ancient Greek proverb that goes "nothing that is bad comes without something good"!). Very true!

Now for the "discovery", in case someone can replicate it. It was discovered in the previous build and also present in the latest #7236 build. Steps to reproduce: Make a fresh full Wacup portable installation.

1. In case you don't have one handy. make a new folder with some FLAC files plus a coverart renamed to "cover-front.jpg" (or something random).

2. Drag the flacs on the Playlist Editor. No Album Art appears.

3. Rename cover-front.jpg --> cover.jpg

4. Right-click on Album Art and choose "Refresh album art". Nothing appears.

5. Close Wacup and reopen it. Album Art appears automagically.

Now heading to read the Release notes !!!

Of course there's no benefit! There's a benefit only when you re-rip your purchased CD to flac.

@GF: I don't understand why you are pissed. I ignored you because you are very OOT - we were talking about the native Wacup Yasapi support, not some third-party solution. All "it says about me" is that I want to stay on topic, inform everybody that all issues were fixed, I expressed my gratitude to the devs in another post, so where's the crime?

If I remember well, flac playback was possible from day 1 of Wacup. What is still in the todo list is flac .cue support.

@Gordon: FYI Not So YASAPI with default settings works now flawlessly in the latest February build.

As for libMAD, there's no alternative mpg decoder with its features. However the issue is somewhat redundant because nowadays everybody uses flac and other lossless formats - mp3 is becoming obsolete (except for the audio track in some videos)

I had done this some years ago with Winamp portable and it worked fine too in Mint. Did you ever find a linux equivalent for DFX audio enhancer? I am glad to report that build #7170 fixed the visualization problems when using the Not So Yasapi plugin after a fresh portable install, using default settings. It's a dream come true, my gratitude to all devs and testers!

The problems start if you are willing to trade privacy with speed. That's why Google's Chrome is out of the question for me. I am sticking with Firefox + several combined privacy and security plugins. You cannot surf the web without protection in the same way you can't use a PC without a good and non-free antivirus, therefore I have learned to live with the degradation of performance due to all the protections I use.

For secondary use in known sites I use Feodor's MyPal, a lightweight Palemoon fork (find it in github, it also works fine in XP), so Mourningstar has a good point here, plus the ematrix plugin, because I can't surf without tight control of any and all javascript. I use the second browser to download things that my armored Firefox doesn't want to, by dragging the url from FF to MyPal.

Thanks Aminifu and our DeaR Overlord (just discovered what 'dro' stands for !) for your kind interest.

libMAD is used by the majority of linux music players and portable music devices by default - imho Wacup can't be left behind. Even the prehistoric Winamp used it. Why not let users decide what they want to do - if they want simple general playback they can use the defaults. If they need audiophile quality, 24-32 bits output, noise shaping and most important of all, auto clipping attenuation, they can use MAD. Personally, 90% of my stuff is FLAC, but many users still use the mp3 format for space considerations or convenience - noone has the time to reencode his library or search for better bitrates.

out-yasapi-nt is the continuation of the original out-yasapi: http://pbelkner.de/projects/web/out-yasapi/
I think the development of out-yasapi started long before Wacup was born and I doubt he has any motives to shoot himself in the foot by blocking his plugin for all the winamp-plugin-compatible music players.

My problems with notsoyasapi were the ones that led me to register in this forum and are described here: https://getwacup.com/community/index.php/topic,830.msg5120.html . The issue is still not resolved with me and unfortunately I don't have the time to find the sweet spot of buffer sizes for each new Wacup build - I just learned to live with it.

Well, Microsoft with billions of dollars invested and an army of devs didn't find an idiot-proof solution yet, so it would be preposterous to assume you could do it in a jiffy by yourself... The only realistic and sane advice is "everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler."

I was never aware that you could embed more than one picture in a music file. I did some research and it seems it's not provisioned in the mp3 specifications. For example, a nice small utility that embeds pictures (https://archive.codeplex.com/?p=mp3artembedder) implies that only one is possible.

Therefore, I assume that the mp3 producer used an automated tagger tool which embedded the wrong picture from a list of albumart scans. I think the only remedy is to find the correct cover and re-embed it by using the File Info - Artwork tab (Alt+3) in Wacup.

Dear RudieV, I have not yet delved in the Windows 10 audio stack (and don't intend to, I'm Win7 for life), but from my long experience in Win7, unless you use ASIO or WASAPI output, Windows will get in the way and won't let you by default output anything other than 16/44 unless configured so. 24/96 is possible, even 5.1 and 7.1, Dolby 24/96 or DTS (see https://windowsreport.com/get-dts-sound-pc/) but higher-res is totally out of the question with Directsound.

IMHO it's not productive for the Wacup developers to compare Wacup performance and capabilities with that of fourth-party players like MusicBee. I can too name a dozen apps, free and paid, that can play DSD properly, but please consider that we are all here to help make Wacup come to at least the level of Winamp, when I presume it will finally get out of beta.

Therefore, please report first if what you want to is feasible with Winamp 5.666 (patched). If it's not, there are numerous known and unknown scenarios for what may be wrong in your case.

Finally, don't assume that the DAC drivers, however expensive it is, are written properly - in the audio world the norm is a patchwork of fixes upon fixes.
