Title: Multiple Genres / Artists
Post by: Redearth on February 02, 2021, 12:09:24 PM
I've tried searching for any mentions of this and was surprised I couldn't find anything. I apologize if it's already been brought up, and any links would be appreciated.

This is being slowly adapted by other music software, but the ability to tag multiple genres or artists, separated by semicolon, and have each genre/artist displayed on its own.

e.g. If an album is tagged with genre "Trip-Hop; Electronica", the album would be displayed under both "Trip-Hop" and "Electronica", and there would be no genre listed as "Trip-Hop; Electronica".

Similar with artist, e.g. if an album is tagged with album artist "Various Artists" and a track is tagged with "Brian Eno; David Bowie; Aphex Twin", the album would show up under album artist "Various Artists", and the track would show up under artists "Brian Eno", "David Bowie", and "Aphex Twin", but there would be no artist listed as "Brian Eno; David Bowie; Aphex Twin".

It's something I'm aware off as a thing along with some of the quirky ways some of the tag formats want such values specified (i.e. use of slashes which then breaks things like AC/DC). The main issue I see is that it starts to make the handling of things more complicated (e.g. in the library it would make some of the counts be more than they necessarily are) along with how to make it fit in with aspects from modern skins / other plug-ins that cannot easily be made to support such a change as it'd end up looking even more inconsistent if some parts show one bit of the genre & others can show everything. Something for me to think on as to how it can be done without also being a hassle to support / maintain.

WMA, OGG, and FLAC formats also support adding multiple GENRE tags.  Looks like WACUP can already read these, though it seems to just concatenate the values together and treat them as one genre.  For example, here's the metadata (viewed in Mp3tag):

And here's how WACUP reads it:

This doesn't really work for my by-genre SmartView.  I was trying to list tracks under multiple genres, but ended up creating a bunch of new combination-genres.
